Amsterdam Gay Pride (AGP) is considering to remove the word ‘gay’ in the name. Irene Hemelaar, Director of LGBT emancipation of the organisation , has confirmed this in response to a message from the Amsterdam broadcaster AT5. Irene: ‘It’s a plan that we’re discussing with the community. Lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people don’t feel addressed by the term ‘gay’.
The proposal received different reactions. Irene: ‘There were people who responded very sad, others were just very happy.’ If the name changes, it would only be from 2017. ‘This year it’s still just Amsterdam Gay Pride and next year we will celebrate EuroPride.’
